Bumpers

One of the most self explanatory names of the auto body parts is the bumper. The name tells the purpose of the part. Of course it is not meant to bump others, but to take the beating if someone else bumps into you, and protect the other parts like headlights or the grill. These are placed at the ends of a vehicle which are most likely to bump against others. These are made up of various materials and the designs also to serve many purposes. The bumpers are the primary protection against impacts.

The primary role of the bumpers is to protect. They are the forward most elements in a car. Thus mostly the bumps with other cars, poles, walls and others are taken on this one. The other vehicles bump on this bumper as well as the rear one, which is the last part of the car. These two will absorb the shocks from small collisions and keep the inner parts from harm. In the other collisions though, bumpers are hardly effective as the shocks will usually be too large for them. These are like paint on the wall. It can repel splatters of water but is not useful in floods to protect the wall.

There is more than the one function to the bumpers. They are also important element in the aerodynamic design and performance in vehicles. The bumpers are the first element to invade a column of air while moving. Thus their aerodynamic performance is very important to the drag and the grip on the road. This is even more important in case of the fast cars. The Mercedes bumper for example has aerodynamic design that allows the air to flow in a way to create the best possible combination of down forces and resistance. This is a large element in the performance of the sports and the super cars.

After the aerodynamics, comes the role of supporting the other parts. The bumpers are like a turret in a machine. They hold more parts than we feel they do. Most of the car and truck number plates are fixed on the bumpers. These essentials are accompanied by the fog lights. Many bumpers have slots for these lights as they are popular due to the needs in some areas and as a car fashion element in most of the others.

After all of these functions, the bumpers must look good. They are a part of the Façade of the ride and can shatter the looks if are not up to the mark with other body parts. The looks of the bumpers need to be carefully carved keeping in mind the other roles they need to perform. This makes the designing as important as any other parts of the car as they touch the performance on one hand and looks on the other hand while standing guard in the safety to some extent.
